Step inside the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia, Barcelona's most recognisable building and the work Antoni Gaudi spent the last decades of his life on. Begun in 1882 and still unfinished, it is the rare monument where the scaffolding is part of the story.
What you will see inside
The nave was designed as a stone forest: columns branch towards the ceiling like trees, and the light changes colour as it passes through the stained glass. The east-facing windows are cool blues and greens; the west side turns amber, orange and red. Outside, the Nativity facade, begun under Gaudi himself, and the later Passion facade speak two completely different sculptural languages, and both are worth a slow walk before you go in.
How long to plan
Most visitors spend around 60 to 90 minutes inside. Add time for the security check at the entrance and for walking around the exterior, which is free to see from the street. Arriving 15 to 20 minutes before the time on your ticket usually makes entry smoother.
Best time of day
Morning slots favour the blue and green side of the glass, late afternoon the warm colours. Midday is generally the busiest at the entrance. Whichever slot you choose, entry is timed, so it is worth planning the rest of your day around it.
Getting there
The basilica is at Carrer de Mallorca 401, in the Eixample district. Metro lines L2 and L5 stop at Sagrada Familia station right beside the building, and several bus lines stop nearby. Use the entrance shown on your voucher, as access points differ by ticket type.
