Park Güell sits on Carmel Hill above the Gràcia district, and it is the clearest place in Barcelona to see how Antoni Gaudí thought about landscape. Eusebi Güell commissioned it in 1900 as a private housing estate for wealthy families. Only two of the sixty planned houses were ever built, the project failed commercially, and the city bought the site and opened it as a public park in 1926. What survives is not a neighbourhood but its infrastructure: terraces, viaducts, staircases and pavilions that Gaudí shaped to follow the slope rather than cut into it.
The ticketed part of the site is called the Monumental Zone, and it covers the areas most visitors come to see. The Dragon Stairway climbs from the main entrance past El Drac, the mosaic salamander that has become the emblem of the park. Above it, the Hypostyle Room stands on eighty-six columns designed to carry the weight of the terrace and, at the same time, to drain rainwater down through their hollow shafts into a cistern below. That terrace is the Nature Square, edged by the serpentine bench: one continuous undulating seat covered in trencadís, the broken-tile mosaic technique Gaudí used to turn ceramic offcuts into colour.
From the bench the view runs across the Eixample to the Sagrada Família and out to the Mediterranean. The two pavilions at the main gate, with their mushroom-like roofs and the cross-topped tower, mark where the estate would have begun. The Casa Museu Gaudí, the house where the architect lived for almost twenty years, stands inside the park but is a separate venue ticket and is not included here.
Entry to the Monumental Zone is by timed slot. You choose a date and an entry time when you book, and the venue admits you within that window. The rest of Park Güell — the woodland paths, the viaducts higher up the hill, the Turó de les Tres Creus with its wider panorama — is free to enter and needs no ticket at all.
The park is a hill, and it feels like one. Paths are steep, uneven in places, and there are long flights of steps. Comfortable shoes matter more here than at most Barcelona sites, and there is little shade on the terrace in the middle of the day. Early morning and the last slots of the afternoon are usually calmer, and the low light suits photographs better.
