Casa Milà (La Pedrera) Entry Ticket

Casa Milà is the last private house Gaudí built, finished in 1912 for Pere Milà and Roser Segimon, and Barcelona did not warm to it. The stone facade curls along the corner of Passeig de Gràcia and Carrer de Provença without a single straight line, and the city nicknamed it La Pedrera, the quarry. The name stuck. Gaudí never used it.

The facade is not a wall. It is a self-supporting stone skin hung on an iron structure, which is why the building has no load-bearing walls inside and why the apartments could be laid out freely. The wrought iron balconies were made by the Badia brothers from scrap and offcuts, each one different, and they read as seaweed or as thicket depending on the light.

The visitor route usually covers three things. The Espai Gaudí occupies the attic, a long space under two hundred and seventy brick catenary arches that rise and fall with the roofline, and it holds models and drawings explaining how Gaudí worked out his structures by hanging weights on strings. Below it, an apartment has been furnished as a middle class Barcelona family would have kept it in the early twentieth century. Above it, the roof terrace is the reason most people come.

That terrace is a landscape rather than a floor. Stairwells, ventilation shafts and chimneys are shaped into figures that face each other across the levels, some helmeted, some wrapped in trencadís, and paths wind between them with steps up and down. The view takes in Passeig de Gràcia in one direction and the Sagrada Família in another.

Entry is by timed slot. You choose a date and a time when you book, and the venue admits you within that window. The roof is open to the sky and can be closed at short notice in rain or strong wind; that decision belongs to the venue.
