Hospital de Sant Pau Entry Ticket

Hospital de Sant Pau is the largest Art Nouveau complex in Europe, and for most of its life it was not a monument at all. It was a working hospital. Lluís Domènech i Montaner began it in 1902, funded by the banker Pau Gil, and it treated patients until 2009, when medical services moved to a new building next door and the historic pavilions were restored and opened to visitors.

Domènech i Montaner built it as twenty-seven pavilions set in gardens rather than as one block. The reasoning was medical: separating patients by condition, giving every ward daylight on several sides, and surrounding the beds with greenery and colour instead of corridors. The pavilions are linked by tunnels underground, so staff and supplies moved without crossing the gardens. He also turned the site forty-five degrees against the Eixample grid, which is why it faces the Sagrada Família down a diagonal avenue.

The decoration is not restrained. Pavilion facades carry mosaic panels, sculpted stone and ceramic domes, and inside, wards are lined with glazed tile up to the ceiling because tile could be washed. Practical decisions and ornament are the same decision here, which is the most interesting thing about the place.

It is a ten minute walk from the Sagrada Família and it is almost always quieter. Where the basilica moves visitors through fixed routes, Sant Pau is a site you cross on foot, between buildings and across open ground, and how long you stay is up to you.

Entry is by ticket, and some pavilions hold changing exhibitions or close for events. The venue decides what is open on any given day.
