Duomo di Milano Entry Ticket

The Duomo di Milano took roughly six centuries to build, and that is the first thing worth knowing about it. Work began in 1386 under Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the interior was in use by the middle of the fifteenth century, and the facade was only completed in the nineteenth under Napoleon's orders. The last bronze door went in during 1965. Milanese use "long as the Duomo's construction" as a figure of speech for anything that will never end.

It is the largest church in Italy and one of the largest in the world, built almost entirely of Candoglia marble from a quarry on Lake Maggiore that the Visconti granted to the cathedral works in perpetuity. The marble still comes from there. Its pinkish grey colour is why the facade looks warm at sunset and almost white at midday, and why the building never quite settles into one appearance.

Inside, fifty-two columns divide the nave and aisles, one for each week of the year, and they are so tall that the vaults disappear into shadow for most of the day. The stained glass windows in the apse are among the largest in Europe. On the floor near the south entrance runs a brass meridian line laid in 1786, with a hole in the opposite wall that throws a spot of sunlight onto the line at solar noon. Nearby stands the statue of Saint Bartholomew carrying his own flayed skin, carved by Marco d'Agrate in 1562, anatomically exact and genuinely unsettling.

Above the vaults, the roof terraces are a separate ticket and a different experience: a walk among a hundred and thirty-five spires and thousands of statues, with the Madonnina gilded on the tallest of them and the Alps visible on a clear day. Access is by stairs or lift.

Entry to the cathedral is by timed slot. It remains an active place of worship, so shoulders and knees must be covered and access can be limited during services.
