Casa Batlló Entry Ticket

Casa Batlló stands on Passeig de Gràcia in a block Barcelona nicknamed the Illa de la Discòrdia, the block of discord, because three architects built three very different houses side by side. Gaudí did not start from nothing here. The building already existed, put up in 1877, and between 1904 and 1906 Josep Batlló asked him to remake it. Gaudí kept the structure and rebuilt almost everything a visitor can see.

The facade is the reason people stop on the pavement. It is faced in trencadís, broken glass and ceramic set into a rippling surface that changes colour as the light moves across it. The balconies read as masks or skulls depending on who is describing them, the columns at street level are shaped like bones, and the roof rises in a scaled ridge that most people read as the back of a dragon. Gaudí never confirmed the dragon. He rarely explained anything.

Inside, the house is organised around a light well that Gaudí tiled in blue, dark at the top and pale at the bottom, so that daylight falling from the skylight reaches the lower floors at roughly the same intensity as the upper ones. Windows are larger downstairs and smaller upstairs for the same reason. It is a piece of engineering disguised as decoration, and it is the clearest thing to look for as you climb.

The visitor route moves upward through the Noble Floor, where the Batlló family lived, past the doors and fireplaces Gaudí designed for them, then through the attic with its catenary arches and out onto the roof terrace among the chimneys. Ticket tiers differ: some open more rooms or add extra content, so the option you choose decides what you see.

Entry is by timed slot. You pick a date and a time when you book, and the venue admits you within that window. The house is busy through the middle of the day, and the first and last slots are usually the calmest.
